Stephanie, have to admire your ambition and keeping those heirloom lines going! Sounds as though most of your lettuce varieties are doing well. My experience with lettuce here in California has shown that snails and slugs can wipe out seedlings without a trace. Forget the dumb beer in a can trick. Sluggo ™ is non-toxic to pets and takes out snails that typically are introduced, non native species. I started growing fruit trees — don’t have to plant every year, just prune.

I tried my best to attend this conference last February but was not able to do so because of a hectic schedule. I was really looking forward to the wine sessions and the blueberry production sessions. I hope there would be another conference like this. If there would be, I’ll make sure that I don’t have time constraints.

I may sound a bit odd but it is for the first time that I heard about Fire Ants. I knew ants sting but I never heard that they were venomous. I researched more and found that there are 285 species of it and they are of different types like ginger ants, tropical fire ants etc. Thanks for adding to my knowledge.

I am going to give it a try; I have a 15′ x 15′ section that has tons of sun and nothing in it. This is my first year planting a garden, but so far I have a 100% growth rate for about 72 sq’ of space broken into 3×3′ boxes 18″ deep or more each.

Hi- I was just out looking at my herb garden, I had gathered dill a few evenings ago and had to wash off some little white global things. Today the remaining dill has tiny caterpillars that are similar to the black swallowtail in the picture…… Guess I’ll be buying dill for a while! Thanks for the ID! Betsi in South Carolina

As an experiment, I collected a few apples with the intent of planting some seeds. The apples kept disappearing due to squrrels and stuff. When I finally was able to keep a few apples, I dried them and then soaked them in water for a few days, then broke each apple into smaller pieces. Each piece contained several seeds. Each piece was planted just below the ground surface in a pot of soil. Many of the seeds germinated and came up as seedlings after a few weeks.

You just roughen the surface with the file. You are thinning the seed cover so the seedling can break through easier.

I bought Nasturtium seeds and on the pack of the package, it says you should file them to aid germination. How far should I file? I’m planting them in a pot and keeping them inside.

Those are scary looking beetles, but they are not harmful. They use those things to fight for turf and women, just like their namesake.

The one thing that used to really scare the you-know-what out of me as a kid was a life-size picture of a Rhinocerous Beetle in an insect book we had. I could read the book but always had to skip the pages around the picture in case I saw it or worse, had to touch it.
