Now that salad days are finally here again, there’s nothing lovelier on home-grown summer leaves than a drizzle of virgin olive oil and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Shop bought fruits are fairly cheap and plentiful, but imagine the pleasure of plucking a fragrant fruit from your very own lemon tree.
And there’s no need to live in a Mediterranean climate to be able to grow lemon trees. It’s quite simple to grow them in chillier climes, even in northern areas. They aren’t hardy in regions subject to temperatures below minus five degrees Centigrade. However, a lemon tree will grow quite happily outside in the summer months and then you can overwinter it in a conservatory or indoors. They’re such attractive and fragrant plants, they’re a pleasure to keep, indoors or out.
Lemon trees will generally grow to a maximum of around five feet in a large pot and larger if they’re planted directly into the soil. If you need to bring your plants indoors and you’re worried about space, then you might like to consider dwarf lemon trees. These will still provide a sizeable crop of fruit, but they will be easier to accommodate indoors over the winter months as they will only grow to around two feet tall.
These beautiful plants provide plenty to see all year round. Generally, in the spring, you can expect fragrant white blossom on your lemon trees. This is followed by pretty fruit buds in early summer which mature in autumn. The evergreen foliage is lustrous and fragrant so you can enjoy your lemon tree right through autumn and winter. It is worth noting though, that lemon trees can fruit and flower at varying times throughout the year in colder climates.
It couldn’t be easier to get hold of a plant, whether it’s a standard tree or dwarf lemon trees you’re after. There is an enormous variety of lemon trees for sale online and in garden centers. Watch out for more mature plants that are already several years old so you can look forward to harvesting a crop of zesty lemons from them in your first year.
You Garden has an excellent selection of pre-grown lemon trees for sale at competitive prices. They provide larger plants in 6.5 litre pots or you can choose smaller versions in a 3 litre pot.
