Popcorn Books: Bite Sized Guides to the Universe

by Stephanie Suesan Smith on July 24, 2011

Ever tried to read a user manual and given up in disgust?  It was too technical, or didn’t make sense.  Sometimes guides to social media are that way, too.  Or they contain so much information that you get overwhelmed.  It doesn’t have to be that way.

I have started a series of what I call Popcorn Books:  Bite Sized Guides to the Universe™.  They are small pamphlets that contain just the information you need on the subject at hand.  No extra stuff to confuse you.

The first of these was written to help my Mother’s friends who write books, but do not necessarily use computers for other things.  It is called How to Use Social Media to Make Your Blog Work Harder. Getting your blog on Kindle, an Amazon author page, a Goodreads author page, Facebook and Twitter are covered. This pamphlet is only 99 cents at Amazon.com.

What if you do not have a Twitter account? You are in luck. I wrote a pamphlet on How to Set Up A Twitter Account. It covers establishing an account and making a nice looking profile page. You not only want a twitter account, you want to look like you know what you are doing and drive traffic to your webpage and mailing list.

What other topics would you like to see Bite Sized Guides to the Universe tackle? What are you having trouble mastering?

Google + is all the rage right now so you might do a primer for beginners on how to set up an account there and just some really basic tasks like adding to circles. I have many resources in my Google + account you can draw from.

That is a good idea. Google+ can be a bit confusing at first.

Hi Stephanie, you really got a nice point on your post. Gail has some interesting share with google plus but I am not sure if I want my facebook and twitter being replaced by google plus even if I have already set it up.

It would be nice to get your books on an I phone! You really can’t read a normal user guide on a phone and most of us could use a quick guide to to using smart phones! Good luck and get started before someone else beats you to it!

That’s a great idea. I don’t know anyone who still has the patience to look things up in huge user manuals and guides. I wonder if it wouldn’t also be a good idea to put them up as videos as well. People seem to love videos these days.

I think the guide is perfect for those who has short attention span like myself. I don’t also like to read long posts, unless they are really interesting. Thanks for sharing Stephanie.

Glad to help. Hope you can use them to learn new things that have been hard to master in the past.

This is a really awesome idea, Stephanie! I also really like the name. Popcorn Books is catchy and cute, readers will love it 🙂 Do you only plan to do books about technological matters or do you think you would write on other topics too? Maybe gardening help or photography since you seem interested in those?

I plan on writing on a variety of topics. If you have something specific you want to know about, please let me know.

Well I, for one, HATE reading instruction manuals… So this sounds like a great idea to me! Any chance you’ll be writing one on that age old problem of setting the time on my VCR? 😉 ~Laurie

Awesome idea, I’ll be interested to see what other popcorn books you put out! Have you thought about doing one about the basics of blogging, for beginners? I’ve read lots of blog articles about that, but I feel like having all the tips in one place would be more beneficial.
