Tell the World: Blogger for Hire

I write for money.  Blogging, web articles, print articles, even a book.  I also help people maintain their WordPress blogs, or set them up.  I have photographs of a number of North East Texas plants and animals for sale.  I even do scroll saw work for people.  How do I let people know they can hire me?  I have a tab on my menu called “Hire Me.”

I have a mentor, Gail from Growmap.com, who suggested I do this.  I do not like to put a price on things because I was taught it was a bad negotiating tactic.  As Gail explains in her article, Why Your Blog Should Have A Hire Me Tab people tend to want to know if they can afford a person before they contact you.  No prices, and they move on.

Of course, if you just build it, they WON’T come.  You have to make connections in other places, such as the Blogathon, Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, and other social media outlets to draw people to you.  You also have to have good content, a good design, and enough details about yourself that someone feels you are qualified for the job.  Think of your blog and website as one big resume when you are a writer.  What does your website or blog say about you?

Great info, Suesan. I’ve wondered about putting rates on my blog and writer website. I agree that it’s more likely people will move on if they don’t see how much you charge. Thanks for all the insights you’ve shared in the Blogathon!

Great information, Stephanie. Its such an awkward topic when there is not a clear baseline. I’ve had the same situation being self-employed before. I’ve been interested in learning a good way to handle online work also. But first I need to admit that I am a writer and post it. 🙂

We have all been brainwashed into thinking we should not be selling and that we should object when others mention what they have to offer. This is simply ridiculous. Marketing is NOT evil. (I wrote a post with that title.) It is simply the way we find what we want and need.

When we decide what to do we need to think about what we want when we’re buying. How many of us actually contact someone and ask how much something costs? Most people figure “if you have to ask – you can’t afford it.

Without a price your visitors have no way to know if you’re in their price range. Y0u may be contacted by people who will pay far less than what is worth your time and not contacted by your best potential customers because they assume they can’t afford you.

Hi Stephanie,
It’s taken me 29 days to find your blog and we are both in #blog2011 as it is known in twitter. I love your “Hire Me” idea and plan to do it and will link to your post somewhere in the process. My blog has been more serious than I can handle at times so the rest of the blogathon, I am probably lightening up. I might even do a “hire me” post. The downside of blogging without it is that lots of people approach you to donate your content for free. In my case, I am using the blog as a marketing tool. And frankly, like many women over 50, I am under-employed, but skilled. Nice meeting you now.

You should also put your services as a consultant who helps people access care for themselves or family members on your tab. People who understand the red tape and how to cut it are in great demand, and can really improve the quality of someone’s life.

I had read that before and always take Gail’s advice – have always had a tab before, just changed the wording on mine to read “Hire Me” also!

I do better on blogs, then twitter, than the others. Facebook is a huge time sink for me with little return.
